Death by hanging or decapitation?

I read with ad nauseum about the hanging of two of Saddam Hussein’s co-defendants — Barzan Ibrahim (Saddam’s half-brother) and Awad Hamed al-Bandar (former head of Iraq’s Revolutionary Court).

What sickens me was when the trapdoors opened below their feet, one of them, Barzan Ibrahim was decapitated by the noose. As much as I want to take a neutral stand on this matter, I cannot help but make my feelings known. It is disgusting. These things should not happen. It clearly shows that these executions were carried out hastily without any preparations and calculations.

Death by hanging is a measured and calculated drop in which the person’s weight is used to determine how much slack should be provided in the rope so that the distance dropped would be enough to ensure that the neck breaks at either the 2nd and 3rd or 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae.

For Ibrahim to have his head ripped off from his body by the noose proved that his body weight and the distance of the drop were definitely not taken into consideration in this execution..
