What are the significant advantages of conducting effective training programs?

By Major (Rtd) Teoh

The significant advantages are many if one really cares to count. Many companies are unable to appreciate the importance of conducting effective training programs. It is either they can’t or they do not want to.

When the economy is good, they say they have no time to train their staff, and when the economy slows down, they say they have no funds. This is the tale of “head you lose and tail I win” story once told too often.

A short cut for them will be staff pinching and they are very much at ease with it. Little do they realize that it does not help towards the development of the staff. In the long run, it will turn out to be more expensive when the turn-over rate escalates.through the roof; accident rates double and scraps and rejects litter the production floor.

Training and developing the human capial should be viewed as an investment. No doubt the immediate returns are not easily and readily felt or seen, but the end result will definitely some mileage to the overall performance of the company.

Training like education, should be a continuous process. It should be from the cradle to the grave. It should not be in fits and starts. It should be carefully planned and charted. It should permeate and filter through all levels of management right from the top, cascading down to the lowest rung of the management hierarchy.

Installing and carrying out effective training programs will mean a better and skilled workforce leading to the following:

  • Increase productivity;
  • Chart clear career paths;
  • Enhance job performance;
  • Reduce wasteage
  • Reduce rejects;
  • Upgrade employee skills;
  • Reduce accidents;
  • Reduce costs;
  • Increase profits;
  • Boost employees confidence and morale;
  • Reduce down time;
  • Develop supervisors and managers;
  • Nuture healthy work attitudes;
  • Prepare employees for promotion;
  • Reduce the turn-over rate;
  • Reduce scrap;

(The above points are randomly placed and are not placed in order of importance.)

When all the programs are in place and implemented, it will automatically make your company the company of choice. Besides attracting, it will also prevent your present employees from leaving too. It is a double edge sword.
